Trying to get better at getting better

In this presentation I recently gave for the MSc Nursing programme at SUPSI University in Switzerland, I explored the potential of generative AI to transform health professions education, and offered practical approaches for educators to embrace this change. We started with the rapidly evolving capabilities of generative AI as a multimodal tool that provides intelligence-on-demand, highlighting how it differs fundamentally from other technologies used in education. Instead of focusing on what AI cannot do (and often taking solace in that rapidly diminishing space), I tried to work through how might change what we can accomplish by working with AI to support learning.

I tried to emphasise the importance of a paradigm shift, away from using AI merely for content creation, to using it as a collaborative learning partner that fosters dialogue and student agency. I also discussed how assessment approaches could evolve to focus on how students collaborate with AI rather than attempting to create “AI-proof” evaluations.

Throughout the session, I tried to give examples of how AI-supported learning environments can enhance metacognitive awareness, build adaptive expertise, and support knowledge construction across professional boundaries. My central claim is that using AI to support learning, teaching, and assessment represents an opportunity to explore an alternative education paradigm, requiring us to reimagine education instead of simply trying to reform assessment.
