Today I facilitated the second workshop for health professions educators at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI). I was invited to share some thoughts on implications of generative AI in HPE, and to work through some practical applications with colleagues. Thank you to Marco Barbero and his colleagues from SUPSI, for their input and openness to discuss these ideas.
Overview
In this presentation I explore the transformative potential of generative AI in health professions education, addressing its impact on teaching, assessment, and learning practices. I introduce the current capabilities of frontier AI models and discuss common misconceptions about their use. I then present several practical applications of AI in education, including the generation of learning materials, provision of personal feedback, and creation of AI-supported assessments. I challenge traditional assessment paradigms and propose new approaches that use AI to create more authentic, adaptive, and continuous evaluation methods. The role of AI tutors and assistants in supporting student learning is examined, with examples from recent research and emerging platforms. The presentation also addresses the ethical considerations and potential risks associated with AI integration in professional education, emphasising the need for clear policies and guidelines. I conclude by discussing the importance of developing AI literacy among educators and students, and suggest a future where human-AI collaboration enhances clinical practice and education. Throughout, I try to balance optimism about AI’s potential with a critical examination of its limitations and the challenges of implementation in health professions education.

Hi Steve. It wasn’t recorded but I’ll share the slides asap.
Thanks Michael. I would be interested in listening to your presentation. Do you know if it was recorded or if a transcript is available?
Thank you for facilitating such an engaging and thought-provoking workshop. It was a pleasure to participate and exchange ideas on the implications of generative AI in health professions education.
In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, it is crucial for universities to adapt swiftly and embrace these technologies to enhance their offerings. Generative AI presents a unique opportunity to improve not only the efficiency of educational practices but also the quality of learning experiences for students. By integrating AI into teaching, assessment, and learning support, we can better meet the needs of both educators and learners in an increasingly complex and digital world.
