I had an interesting conversation this morning, sparked by an observation from Marco Barbero, about the level of confidence it’s possible to have in a patient’s memory of their pain. Which reminded me of Daniel Kahneman’s concepts of the ‘remembering self’ and the ‘experiencing self’.
I think it’s relevant in the context of health professions education because so much of what we teach students about healthcare is premised on the idea that patients’ memories of pain are stable over time.
What if they aren’t?
