Generative conversations – IFOMPT pre-conference workshop

Here are the slides from the pre-conference workshop I facilitated at the 2024 IFOMPT conference. Note that the slide content is intended to stimulate conversation among workshop participants, rather than provide in-depth detail about each area of practice.

Abstract

This presentation explores the impact and potential of generative AI in the fields of physiotherapy practice, education, and research. It begins by addressing the paradigm shift in our understanding of AI, moving from viewing it as a mere calculator to recognising it as a creative partner capable of imagination and collaboration. The presentation acknowledges both the opportunities and challenges presented by AI, particularly in healthcare and education.

Key topics covered include:

  1. AI in clinical practice: Discussion of AI’s performance in diagnostic tasks, patient interactions, and its potential to enhance clinical decision-making.
  2. AI in physiotherapy education: Exploration of AI’s role in creating educational materials, personalised learning experiences, and the implications for assessment methods.
  3. AI in research: Examination of AI’s capabilities in literature review, hypothesis generation, experimental design, and data analysis.

The presentation emphasises the importance of viewing AI as a tool for augmenting human capabilities rather than as a replacement for human expertise. It encourages physiotherapists to develop a mindset of curiosity and adaptability towards AI, while maintaining ethical, human-centred care.

The presentation concludes by highlighting the need for the physiotherapy profession to reshape its practices to meet the evolving needs of the community in the age of AI, while preserving the core values of patient care and professional expertise.
