The time I spent with colleagues in SAAHE were among the most transformative and nurturing experiences I had as a young academic and emerging researcher. Working through this project of organising my website has provided me with several opportunities to reflect on that time of my life, for which I am truly grateful.
A few years ago I initiated a project in SAAHE where I started interviewing recent PhD graduates to promote the work being done in South African health professions education. In the end I only recorded 8 episodes, which is a pity because I still think it’s a valuable exercise to share research findings in this way. Also, episodes 05 and 08 aren’t PhD projects, but soon after starting the series it seemed to make sense to experiment with different approaches and topics.
Anyway, I realised recently that I hadn’t captured that series here as part of my portfolio, so I’ve posted it here for my own records.
Here they are:
- Patient-centredness, with Elize Archer.
- Mapping exit-level assessment, with Christina Tan.
- Standard setting, with Scarpa Schoeman.
- Case based learning, with Corne Postma.
- A critical pedagogy for online learning, with Michael Rowe.
- A humanistic pedagogy for student support, with Mpho Jama.
- Game based learning, with Simone Titus.
- Building a career in HPE, with Vanessa Burch.
If one of the aims of scholarship is to disseminate new ideas to the public then this seems like a great way to do it. While these recordings are a record of a moment in time I wish I’d been able to invest more in the project, as it seems like it could have kept growing and showcasing the interesting HPE research being done in South Africa.
Perhaps it’s an idea worth building on?
