Trying to get better at getting better

Generative AI and student learning

As generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) tools continue to evolve and become more sophisticated they present opportunities and risks to student learning. In this video, Sydney University’s Danny Liu takes us through some of the ways students could be using and misusing gen AI for assessment, and offers some thoughts on how to address these challenges.

This is a great – if brief – overview of several ways that generative AI is implicated in supporting student learning. The video also does a great job of showing off the capabilities of generative AI. And in my experience, most people still vastly underestimate what language models are capable of.

This video also shows some of the ways that many of the assessment processes in higher education are not fit for purpose.

We really need to acknowledge that tinkering around the edges of something that’s broken, isn’t going to fix it.
