Trying to get better at getting better

Guide on the side, or sidelined?

We talk about the need for teachers to move from being the ‘sage on the stage’ to the ‘guide on the side’, and how this is a positive approach that positions the student at the centre of their learning rather than the teacher.

But another way of viewing this is that students’ use of AI moves teachers to the side, and out of the way. In other words, AI leads to teachers being sidelined. It’s a much less positive framing of the scenario for teachers.

And if I’m honest, I think that being sidelined is probably the more realistic scenario. Are teachers really going to give up our core role so easily? Maybe there’s a reason lectures are still so common…maybe we just like being on the stage?

Generative AI might be the lever that initiates a forced removal of teachers from the stage, sidelining them in a move towards true student-centred learning.
