Trying to get better at getting better

Bring on the algorithmic scrutiny of academic work

I’m reviewing a grant application and it’s been… hard. I feel reasonably confident that I can quickly get my head around a research project but sometimes the writing is so poor that I have to read some passages 5 times before (I think) I understand what’s going on.

So I was delighted to find explainjargon.com, which uses the GPT-3 API to simplify complicated writing, and to be honest, I’m hoping that sometime soon all academic work will have to go through something like this. It’s not such a crazy idea; no different to asking that our students submit their work through Turnitin.

Is it too much to hope that we’ll soon all be required to have our work algorithmically evaluated?
