In this presentation (11 March 2024) as part of the BIP in Digital Health, Joost van Wijchen and I discussed some of the key considerations for the responsible use of digital health technologies, particularly in the context of physiotherapy. We also recorded one of our preparation meetings and published it as an In Beta podcast on digital health and learning.

The main points we covered in this presentation include the following.

  1. Security considerations: This includes data protection, encryption, access controls, and cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive patient information.
  2. Regulatory considerations: Digital health solutions must comply with various regulations like HIPAA, GDPR, and medical device classifications. Rigorous testing and validation are necessary.
  3. Ethics considerations: Patient privacy, informed consent, algorithmic fairness, transparency, and accessibility are crucial ethical aspects to address when implementing digital health technologies.
  4. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines: Digital health interventions used in research should adhere to the same ethical and quality standards as traditional trials, ensuring data integrity.

We also pose several challenges and questions related to each of these areas, prompting participants to consider how these issues might be addressed in physiotherapy education, practice, and research.

We wanted to highlight the importance of proactively addressing potential risks and challenges associated with the growing use of digital health technologies, while still recognising the tremendous potential benefits they offer for improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
