Trying to get better at getting better

Prompt engineering is a dead end

One of the more common takes when it comes to developing AI literacy is to talk about prompt engineering as a skill we need to develop. Search for the phrase, and you’ll find plenty of resources, promising to help you become a prompt engineer.

For a while now, I’ve been saying that prompt engineering is a dead end, because at some point, the thing that’s generating the responses is also going to start generating the prompts.

So it was interesting to see Google announce Sidekick, which lives in a panel in Google Docs, processing your document as you write, and providing contextual suggestions in response to what you’ve written. Sounds a lot like prompt engineering to me.
