I’ve been involved in several conversations over the last week where it’s clear that people think using AI will be a deliberate choice, in the sense that you’ll open an AI app and ask it to do something for you.
And this leads them to think we can just create enact rules that take the form of, “You’re not allowed to use that app”, and that this will solve the problem of ‘people using AI’.
But increasingly, AI is baked into software at a more foundational level:
- When you do a search on Google, you’re using AI
- Search engines include AI summaries at the top of the results
- Copilot is deeply integrated into Windows, iOS, and Android
- Soon, Copilot will be standard across Microsoft’s 365 ecosystem
Moving forward, it’s probably a good heuristic to assume that if you’re using software, you’re using AI. And the only way to not use AI will be to not use software.

So true. It’s here, we have to accept it. And…develop ways to help develop this new technology into ways that are good for ALL people and the planet. That means dealing with the tremendous energy sources that AI requires, in a way that is environmentally sustainable.
