Access GPT-4 for free (with limitations) in Microsoft’s new Copilot mobile app

“Microsoft releases its Copilot chatbot as a smartphone app. This gives users free access to GPT-4, the most capable language model from OpenAI, and DALL-E 3.”

There are substantial limitations to this free version (see below) but what’s important here (IMO) is that a couple of months ago you couldn’t get access to this technology with all the will (and money) in the world. Now it’s free for the price of a (free) Microsoft account. You can download the Android app but there’s no iOS version yet.

Limitations of the Copilot app

“According to the chatbot, you can have up to six messages in 60 chats with a Microsoft login. Within a chat, the message limit is 30 messages, after which older messages are deleted. Microsoft’s chatbot cites a “technical limitation that will hopefully be resolved soon.” You can also use the chatbot without a Microsoft login, but text generation will be limited to a few messages.”

Make no mistake, we’re going to see many new apps and services built on top of foundation models, as well as open-source models. There will be so many different AI-based services to choose from, that competition will drive down the price of access to the point where it’ll be free with limitations (as with this new Copilot app), or so inexpensive that it’ll be cost-effective for most people.
