By now you should be, if not comfortable then at least aware, that anyone using any of the frontier models is able to complete any reasonable higher education assessment task without much effort.
A few weeks ago OpenAI released Operator, which is currently a research preview of an agent that can use its own browser to perform tasks for you.
Using its own browser, it can look at a webpage and interact with it by typing, clicking, and scrolling… Operator is one of our first agents, which are AIs capable of doing work for you independently—you give it a task and it will execute it.
That sounds great.
Here is Operator accessing Moodle (a popular learning management system) and completing the (admittedly basic) writing assignments in it.
It’s worth noting that these browser-based agents (Claude also has one called Computer Use) are currently very limited and still need oversight and correction from the user. This version of Operator (or any agent) isn’t going to be able to complete your current assignment via the LMS.
But, for me anyway, this does enough as a proof-of-concept to convince me to completely rethink how we design and assign student work in professional education.
We should assume that the capabilities of agents are only going to get better. How will we respond?
