Trying to get better at getting better

Nice infographic on the question of the role of the lecturer, from this tweet by Sarah Wardell.

The diagram shows three areas of responsibility: Teaching, Research, and Service, each of which is further broken down into specific tasks, for example:

  • Teaching: Writing and revising course content, setting up and managing e-learning materials, supervising student research projects, giving lectures, etc.
  • Research: Applying for grants, managing grant applications, writing papers and articles, attending conferences, publishing books and articles, etc.
  • Service: Participating on academic/professional associations committees, consulting for industry partners, supervising postgraduate students, serving as an editor for journals, organizing events, etc.

I also posted something on this question a few years ago: What is a ‘teacher’?
