Nice infographic on the question of the role of the lecturer, from this tweet by Sarah Wardell.
The diagram shows three areas of responsibility: Teaching, Research, and Service, each of which is further broken down into specific tasks, for example:
- Teaching: Writing and revising course content, setting up and managing e-learning materials, supervising student research projects, giving lectures, etc.
- Research: Applying for grants, managing grant applications, writing papers and articles, attending conferences, publishing books and articles, etc.
- Service: Participating on academic/professional associations committees, consulting for industry partners, supervising postgraduate students, serving as an editor for journals, organizing events, etc.

I also posted something on this question a few years ago: What is a ‘teacher’?
