I’ve been using ChatGPT for internal calibration of my position with respect to certain topics where I know a wide range of perspectives exists. When I want to know how far from centre I am, I query ChatGPT to find out what the ‘average’ position is. Since ChatGPT can only be the average of what most other people have written on the topic, I can get a sense of what you might think of as a consensus position.
And I’ve found that my position on certain topics is sometimes quite extreme (i.e. relatively far from the ‘average’). In other words, conversation with ChatGPT has helped me to better understand where my beliefs sit, relative to the beliefs of others. That’s not to say I need to change my position; I still (usually) remain where I am in terms of what I believe. It’s just that I have a better understanding of where I am relative to where most people would tend to be.
I think this is useful for sense-checking my beliefs.
