Suggestions for clinicians wanting to work in health AI

If you’re a clinician interested in working in health AI:

  1. Learn about AI concepts and related domains (e.g. NLP, expert systems, robotics, etc) before spending any time learning to code.
  2. Focus on the many nuances of clinical practice that come with years of experience at the bedside.
  3. Study human decision-making and the influence of biases and heuristics on clinical outcomes.

It’s not about becoming an expert in machine learning; AI companies have plenty of those. What they don’t always have are clinicians with experience and deep insight into the clinician-patient interactions.
