“There are of course also many things I don’t like about academia. Such as using language styles more to impress than to communicate, treating prestige as if it counted for strong evidence, insisting on either strong methods or silence, and ignoring most everything done by non-academics.“
It’s the last part of this except that I want to highlight, especially in the context of technology in higher education. And in particular, assessment.
For as long as I’ve been an academic, and probably as long as there have been academics, I’ve seen a trend whereby we do everything we can to limit students’use of technology in assessment, even as the world moves on.
We frame it in the language of integrity and cheating, but I’m not convinced that’s the real motivation. We like our walled garden and we don’t like it when the world intrudes on it.
