Kidney selling should be legalised
I believe that at the moment, with selling organs being illegal, the poor are being exploited. That is why I believe that if kidney selling becomes legal, the government can regulate it. There should be guidelines for the selling of kidneys such as the donor should be compensated with a predetermined amount and that the person receiving the organ should pay for the medical bills that are incurred for the actual transplant and recovery thereof. There should also be certain hospitals that are willing to do the operation that are deemed safe and provide sufficient care pre and post operatively, this removes the chance of substandard care for the donor. Also the donor should be made aware of all the complications that can occur from the surgery as well as the long term adjustments that should be made to the donor’s lifestyle, this should be done in their own language and consent to the surgery should be fully informed. This takes away the risk of the donor being caught unaware of certain issues after the kidney has been removed and it is too late to change their mind.
If kidney selling is legalised it would remove the problems caused by black market organ selling such as inadequate medical care and complications from the donation.
The money from the donation could feed the donors family for an extended period so they are not only saving the person in need of a kidney but also themselves and their family. I feel that I person dying of starvation with both kidneys seems silly if they can live with one and have sufficient nutrition for themselves and their family.
I agree with your idea to some extent because if this trade was to be legalised, regulations of it would make it safer for both donor and receiver. I do however think that even if it was to be legalised it would not put an end to backdoor organ selling because people always try to get ‘better’deals and find a cheaper alternatives… it’s human nature.
In reference to the previous comment made on this post, I agree that it is human nature to try to get a “better” deal. However, were the buying and selling of organs to be legalised, at least those people who are willing to put their kidneys up for sale would then have the option of doing it in a safer and more humane manner. Should they choose not to make use of this option it would be up to them, but the government would at least fulfill its responsibilty to provide people with an option.
I completely agree with making the facililties and processes of organ donation safer and more efficient. But i do not agree with putting a price tag on an organ. As i said in my write up, should a price be put on organs, will we not be further depriving the poor? Because surely they will be unable to afford buying a kidney for themselves should they too need one. It is wrong to assume that only the rich suffer with kidney problems and that the poor are always going to be around as an option from which to harvest organs from. And further more you have suggested that the organ receiver also paying for all medical bills of the organ donator. How do you propose a poor person do this? By legalising organ selling we will thus also be excluding the poor from receiving organs themselves should they one day be in need of one.
I agree and disagree with this statement. I do agree that by legalising the selling of kidneys it would be the much safer decision for all parties involved. Also, the kidney donors would be able to provide the ‘better’ lives for their families they were hoping to give their families. Viewing this from another perspective, anything could happen no matter how safe medical facilties and no matter how safe the environmnet may be. All surgical operations are accompanied by risks and anything could go wrong, this would then basically leave the family with nothing. Before these desperate measures are considered, kidney donors should atleast try to seek other alternatives in which they could iprove their lives and should consider these alternatives before emabarking on a life changing decision that will affect the donor and his/her family and a decision that was chosen out of desperation and not real need.
