Here is a summarised version of the presentation I’m giving later this morning at the Reimagine Education conference. You can download the slides here.
This is what people often think of when I say I’m from Cape Town. The reality is that this is where many of my students live. This is the health system in which they work. And for extended periods between 2015 and 2017, this is where they studied. This is my department’s budget for developing innovative approaches to T&L. Health professions education in the 21st century is under pressure to change. Open online courses have been suggested as possible solutions but we know very little about how well they work. In fact, the evidence in support of open online courses is pretty slim. There are significant challenges in trying to innovate in this space. Our project had several collaborators over the 3 year implementation period. We provided student support via online sources and email. The content was developed between all participating institutions. The students worked together in public. Some cohorts were formally recognised for their contributions to the course. We’ve published a variety of papers on this topic, thereby contributing to the evidence base that others can build on. We believe that we’ve made a significant contribution to existing literature in this domain.
Thanks, Anthea. It’s great to hear that it’s useful.
Thanks Michael, I’ve posted the details on our PhD site at Rhodes. Your work is very useful for some of us who focus on blended learning, MOOCs and the Health Sciences.
